45-70 rounds were a popular caliber on the American frontier due to their effectiveness against big game. Rifles of this caliber were used to hunt animals with thick fur and skin, such as buffalo and bears. Over a century later, these powerful rounds are still being used by firearms like our Marlin 45-70 rifles.
It depends. With a smaller diameter and lighter weight, you can carry more 30-30 Winchester rounds. While it doesn't pack the same power as the 45-70, it's strong enough to take down deer without producing nearly as much recoil. However, for tougher game like buffalo or moose, the 45-70 is the clear choice.
Since it's a bigger and heavier caliber, 45-70 rifles are best at short range. Hunters can expect accurate shots up to around 150 yards. At 200 yards, bullet drop becomes exponentially steeper, drastically reducing accuracy.
